Ballot Questions Over Rt 83

Project Date:
Monday, November 5, 2012 - 5:15pm to 7:30pm
Location:
Route 83 Baltimore, MD

In preparation for tomorrow's election, members of artist-activist project Luminous Intervention beamed ballot-question themed slogans onto a bridge over Route 83 during rush hour traffic this evening. Today's action followed on the heels of an equality-themed luminous alteration of The Natty Boh/Utz Girl proposal billboard in Station North on Friday.

Luminous Intervention is a series of large-scale outdoor projections highlighting social and economic issues relevant to Baltimore and its people.

One participant stated, "There were three different messages tonight. First, we're in favor of Ballot Question Four, the Dream Act, because we believe education is a human right and an investment in Maryland. Second, we're in favor of Ballot Question Six because we believe that marriage between any two people is a civil right. And third, we're against Ballot Question Seven because we believe the proposal amounts to an unnecessary tax break for casino owners."

The messages projected onto the Light Rail bridge near Howard Street and overlooking Route 83 contained the following slogans:
"Education Is a Human Right."
"In-State Tuition for ALL Marylanders"
"LOVE IS BIGGER THAN GOVERNMENT."
"YOU DON'T LIKE GAY MARRIAGE? DON'T GET GAY MARRIED."
"DID I VOTE ON *YOUR* MARRIAGE?"
"DON'T GAMBLE WITH OUR FUTURE"
"ARE ALL THE CARDS ON THE TABLE?"

Luminous Intervention is not affiliated with any political campaign or party in this election, although they do regularly collaborate with community organizations and activists. Participants also wanted to acknowledge the contributions of local activists as well as the inspiration of the Light Brigade Maryland.

Another participant lamented the need to boil complicated issues down to slogans but added, "Sometimes in order to really think through an idea it can help to hear it presented in a different form."
